Voice and Internet services are delivered over the same local loop access circuit using the Internet Protocol (IP). SIP Trunking

SIP Trunking is the technology that is most probably expected to replace Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) ultimately as the transfer method for voice traffic from the Public Switched Telephone Network i.e. PSTN to corporate telephony systems or PBXs.

SIP Trunking is basically a service offered by an Internet Telephony Service Provider i.e. ITSP, that unites voice and data onto one communication line, offering assured access between the Internet and the worldwide PSTN.

In order to effectively install it, SIP Trunking requires the assistance of these four necessary modules:

  1. A PBX with a SIP Enabled Trunk Side
  2. An Enterprise Edge Device Understanding SIP
  3. An Internet Telephony or SIP Trunking Service Provider, and
  4. The Public Switched Telephone Network i.e. PSTN.

Though it has been a while since SIP Trunking services have been around, but getting business houses to accept this form of technology have been difficult.
