What is Sip Trunking?
SIP Trunking is simply a single conduit pipeline for multimedia elements (voice, video and data). SIP Trunking reduces or eliminates the need for PSTN media gateways as well as reduce or eliminate the need for narrow-band voice circuits.
SIP Trunking provides a smart and cost effective solution to you by eliminating the need to purchase additional equipment, such as managed media gateway devices to interface between IP voice to the PSTN.
SIP Trunk is a perfect substitute to the traditional PRI or analog circuits and is used along with IP-PBX. It is basically a concurrent (parallel) call channeled over the IP call using the VoIP technology.
The cost savings and increased reliability as backed by the SLA’s of SIP Trunk provides contributes to the Sip’s great popularity.
Also avoid the messy bundles of physical wires as once delivered from the service provider to business, a SIP trunk replaces the traditional fixed Public Switched Telephony Network (PSTN) lines with PSTN connectivity via a SIP trunking service.
Question Comes – What’s New about SIP Trunking?
“Burstable Activity on Trunk Group”
SIP trunks from Broad-Connect Telecom are now available with an enhanced “burstable” feature, temporarily allowing for more trunk channels than provisioned to accommodate bursts of traffic, thus increasing the call completion rate and never giving you a busy tone to your customer. .
The PBX: In most cases the PBX is an IP-based PBX, communicating with all endpoints over IP, but it may just as well be a traditional digital or analog PBX. The sole requirement is that an interface for SIP trunking connectivity is available.
The Enterprise Border Element: The PBX on the LAN connects to the ITSP via the enterprise border element. The enterprise edge component can either be a firewall with complete support for SIP or an edge device connected to the firewall, handling the traversal of the SIP traffic.
The ITSP: On the Internet, the ITSP (Internet Telephone Service Provider) provides connectivity to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) for communication with mobile and fixed phones.

What is SIP trunk?
A SIP Trunk is primarily a concurrent (parallel) call that is routed over the IP backbone of a carrier using VOIP technology. Sip Trunks are used in conjunction with an IP-PBX and are thought of as replacements for traditional PRI’s or analog circuits. The popularity of SIP Trunks is due primarily to the cost savings of SIP along with the increased reliability as backed by the SLA’s of SIP Trunk Providers.

What are the advantages of SIP Trunks over Analog Circuits?
SIP trunks are cheaper than Analog Circuits without compromising with the service quality that businesses expect from line standards. Moreover, SIP Trunk’s long distance termination charges are cheaper than traditional or TDM rates.
What are the benefits of SIP trunks over PRI?
Cost saving is the primary benefit that SIP trunking has over PRI. SIP can be purchased in increments of 1, whereas PRIs have to be bought in the increments of 23 channels.
SIP Trunks realize their primary benefit over PRI’s from cost savings. Lets say you are a small company with 30 team members. Now your company may purchase 30 traditional lines where as with Broad Connect’s Sip Trunking solution, a 30 person company purchasing just as many SIP trunks as they anticipate having concurrent (parallel) calls…typically 8 to 10). So there is waste reduction and SIP Trunks are very cost effective way for a business to save money.
When should a you as business use a SIP trunk instead of hosted?
You should go for SIP trunks when your needs are best met by premise based system. This system is well-known as IP-PBX. SIP trunks used together with IP-PBX works similar to a hosted solution. Sip Trunks typically save a you money over a hosted solutions.
SIP Trunk can serve the needs of three to four employees (depending on over subscription) while a hosted seat is used for each employee.
What are the advantages of SIP trunking?
- Works with any SIP Supported Device
- Avoid equipment changeovers or service disruption
- Avoid investing in costly TDM gateway or desktop equipments
- Realize the additional cost savings through converged access
- Eliminate the need to purchase and manage traditional TDM-based voice circuits with limited scalability
A SIP Trunk is a logical connection between an IP PBX at your (customer) site and a Broad Connect application server that allows voice over IP traffic to be exchanged between the two.
When a call is placed from an internal phone to an external number, the PBX sends the necessary information to the Broad Connects Server (SIP Trunk provider) who establishes the call to the dialed number and acts as an intermediary for the call. All signaling and voice traffic between the PBX and the Broad Connect server is exchanged using SIP and RTP protocol packets over the IP network.
If the number being called is a traditional PSTN telephone, the Broad Connect Sip Trunk Server routes the IP packets to a PSTN Gateway that is closest to the number being called, to minimize possible long distance charges.
The Broad Connect Sip Trunk Server can also terminate PSTN numbers, and route incoming calls for those numbers back to the IP PBX over the SIP can also Trunk. This allows businesses to offer local phone numbers in several geographical areas, but service them all from a single location.
If the number being called can be reached over a SIP Trunk, the call does not need to be routed over the PSTN, but can be carried on the IP network end to end
Since a SIP Trunk is not a physical connection, there is no pre-determined limit on the number of calls that can be carried over a single trunk. Every call comprises a certain amount of network bandwidth; hence, the number of calls is limited by the amount of bandwidth that can flow between the IP PBX and the Broad Connect’s equipment.
